Special Education Services
At Hickam Elementary School, we are deeply committed to providing an inclusive and supportive learning environment where every student can thrive. Our Special Education Services are designed to meet the unique needs of students who require specialized instruction and support to access the curriculum and reach their full potential.
We work collaboratively with families to ensure that all students receive the appropriate accommodations, modifications, and interventions necessary for their academic and social-emotional growth.
Understanding Special Education Services
Our school provides support for students through various frameworks, primarily:
Individualized Education Programs (IEPs): An IEP is a written plan developed for a public school student who is eligible for special education. It outlines the child's current performance, annual goals, special education and related services, and how progress will be measured. IEPs are developed by a team including parents, teachers, and school specialists.
Section 504 Plans: A 504 Plan is designed for students with disabilities who require accommodations to have equal access to the general education curriculum. It outlines specific accommodations, modifications, or services (e.g., preferential seating, extended time on tests) that allow the student to participate in school activities.
The Special Education Evaluation Process
If you have concerns about your child's learning or development and believe they may benefit from special education services, here is a general overview of the evaluation process:
Initial Concern/Referral: Concerns can be raised by parents, teachers, or other school staff. Discussions often begin with the classroom teacher and/or through the Response to Intervention (RTI) process.
Parent Consent: Formal evaluation can only proceed with informed written consent from parents/guardians.
Comprehensive Evaluation: A team of qualified professionals will conduct a thorough evaluation to assess your child's strengths and areas of need across various domains (e.g., academic, cognitive, social-emotional, physical).
Eligibility Determination: The evaluation team (including parents) reviews the assessment results to determine if the child meets the criteria for a disability under federal and state special education laws.
IEP or 504 Plan Development (If Eligible): If a child is determined eligible, an IEP team or 504 plan team will meet with parents to develop an individualized plan tailored to the student's needs.
