General Learner Outcomes (GLOs)
At Hickam Elementary School, our educational approach goes beyond traditional academics to foster well-rounded individuals prepared for success in life. Central to this commitment are the Hawaii Department of Education's General Learner Outcomes (GLOs). These six essential characteristics serve as the foundation for standards-based learning across all grade levels, guiding students to develop key dispositions and skills necessary for college, career, and community readiness.
The GLOs are integrated into our daily instruction, classroom activities, and school culture, helping students understand the importance of not just what they learn, but how they learn and grow as individuals and community members.
The Six General Learner Outcomes
We encourage our students to embody the following GLOs:
Self-directed Learner: The ability to be responsible for one's own learning.
At Hickam Elementary, students are empowered to set goals, monitor their progress, and take initiative in their educational journey.
Community Contributor: The understanding that it is essential for human beings to work together.
Our students learn the value of collaboration, respect for diverse perspectives, and actively participating in creating a positive school and broader community.
Complex Thinker: The ability to demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving.
We challenge students to analyze information, ask insightful questions, and develop creative solutions to real-world problems.
Quality Producer: The ability to recognize and produce quality performance and quality products.
Students are guided to strive for excellence in all their endeavors, understanding the importance of craftsmanship, effort, and high standards in their work.
Effective Communicator: The ability to communicate effectively.
We equip students with the skills to express their ideas clearly and coherently through speaking, writing, listening, and digital media, fostering productive interactions with others.
Effective and Ethical User of Technology: The ability to use a variety of technologies effectively and ethically.
Our school particularly emphasizes the responsible and productive use of technology, empowering students to leverage digital tools ethically for learning, problem-solving, and creation.
Through the consistent focus on these General Learner Outcomes, Hickam Elementary School strives to develop students who are not only academically proficient but also responsible, contributing, and adaptive citizens of the 21st century.
