Hickam Elementary School is uniquely situated within a dynamic and diverse military community on Oahu. Historic Pearl Harbor is quite literally our "back yard." Because we serve a military population, our student body is highly transient, yet incredibly resilient and globally aware.Â
We are a part of the Hawaii Department of Education's Central Oahu District (Radford Complex) and are supported by a dedicated team of over 70 teachers, counselors, and support staff committed to fostering an exceptional learning environment.
Our school's identity begins with our namesake, Lieutenant Colonel Horace Meek Hickam (1885-1934), a respected Army Air Corps officer and forward-thinking pioneer who championed the future of military aviation. Following his tragic passing in an aircraft accident, the newly constructed bomber base adjacent to Pearl Harbor was named in his honor in 1935.
Hickam Field officially opened in 1938 as one of the most advanced airfields of its time. On December 7, 1941, the base was one of the primary targets during the attack on Pearl Harbor, demonstrating immense bravery and sacrifice. Today, many surrounding homes and buildings—including the iconic Freedom Tower fronting our school—are protected historic structures that commemorate World War II and ground our students in deep military tradition.
In 2010, Hickam Air Force Base and Naval Station Pearl Harbor officially combined to become Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH). We are incredibly proud to carry forward the legacy of smart thinking, dedication, and service defined by Lt. Col. Hickam.

Hail oh hail to thee
Hickam Elementary
We will stand with pride
Which we never will deny
           Â
Friendly faces you will see
On our campus by the sea
Shaded by a kukui tree
Tree of light for you and me
           Â
(Chorus)
With Aloha, Strength, and Wisdom
Like a rainbow, bold and true
Parents, teachers, students
Raise your voices
Hail Hickam Elementary School
