Hickam Elementary is an AVID or Advancement Via Individual Determination school. We believe in preparing all students to be ready for college and career. At the Elementary level, we lay the foundation for students' future success.

college training in high school they had to do to get into where they are now so much fun cuz we also got to explore their jobs and what they did every day and career goals are to go to Yale University and graduate and then go to law school to become a judge Abbott is helping me so much because my call my Avid teachers are telling you what I can do now and what I can do in high school to accomplish these goals Horace Meek Hickam Elementary School was established in 1950 and is located on Joint Base Pearl harbor-hickam many surrounding homes and buildings are determined to be historic through the national register of historic places and local military designation the old places are important and helped Define our community Through the memory of World War II and a sense of orientation to military tradition the water tower friend the school commemorates Victory and has been aptly named Freedom Tower with approximately 550 students Hickam Elementary nerves Almost 100% military dependents a highly transient population students come from many school systems throughout the nation goals for us dependence established in foreign countries at Hickam we are focused on the whole child and we are committed to providing a positive learning environment that inspires Future Leaders  Avid has helped our school focus on a common goal of College and Career readiness it has provided our students with strategies and tools in order to be successful Learners students are able to see that being prepared for college and their chosen career begins now our students know what a successful student looks like what a successful student does and what they need to focus on in order to reach their goals for the future they know that a successful student is organized and several aspects including note taking their backpacks and binders even at home where they do their homework students are provided strategies and best practices have it that help them become critical readers Avid teacher students to write for a variety of purposes also the use of damage strategies such as reflection tools which stands for sit with proper posture lean forward and listen ask pertinent questions need to respond orally and talk with the teacher Socratic seminar and philosophical chairs have helped my students become active participants in class critical thinkers readers and writers students follow agreed-upon norms such as a e i o u asked questions engage fully in the learning process in a great new information open your mind to diverse views and utilize what you learn our Hickam students are learning these valuable skills now and practicing them as they progressed from grade to grade they can see how these skills will help them in the future teachers here at Hickam feel confident that the Avid strategies we teach students will continue Pastor days on our campus they will use these skills to be successful in college and in their chosen career field here's a picture of a successful student organized are Homework Planner in other important papers in it it is important to be organized so if you miss a day of school or don't complain a class job you know and there's what test coming up you know where you started guys are on where to find them being college and career-ready is important because you'll be able to go to college in in classes and have different opportunities to have jobs like a like a veterinarian dentist accountant or a teacher in order to be successful Ulta need to carry like in money and strategies I've seen a tremendous increase in my children's organizational skills they both have an avid Buy an in their Avid binder they have their planner and homework folder in their planner they write their homework everyday and in their binder they also have their homework folder where they put their home where can important papers there's never any question when they come home from school what they have to do for homework and where their papers are they've even generalize these organizational tell us to our home and our home they've set up a study area that's completed with study skills and school supplies the skill what's my students are learning through Avid is very important for them as a military children we move and they move from school to school so sometimes they might start a school might be behind but the skills they're learning through Avid such as note-taking writing strategies two column notes and organizational skills will help them to be success will it any environment in any school they go to in the future this is very important as a military family it gives my students my children an advantage when they do move I'm very pleased with what they've learned through Evan our school has been implementing strategies among grades for three years each grade level built upon itself starting from preschool and preschool we build aviculture by talking about jobs but they want to be when they grow up and what it means to be responsible as teachers we have an added site teams at me monthly to discuss where we are and where we want to be in our school wife efforts are complex the parts are added efforts to each month there are fava coordinator meetings visit other schools to bring back ideas for further implementation also I was able to attend the Avid National Conference in San Diego in 2015 I learned more average size that I could have got for my classroom I also learned what a bit looks like for middle and high school students this help me to keep the end in mind I know what's going to be captain of my preschoolers when they grow up this allows me to help get my students college and career-ready a successful student is someone who's willing to learn and participate in everything in class they try their hardest at everything to do I am a successful student because I try my hardest and I'm constantly going over notes and looking to the book to help me and the information I need for the test all the information organized and keeps me on track with what I'm trying to learn next year it my family and I are moving I'm really excited because be a new experience for us I'm going to need is my two column notes to keep all of my information I'll be a middle school this time and it'll be a lot harder to be much more things I need to remember my binder and planner because it'll help keep all of my information organized I'm interested in going to Texas A&M because my dad went there I'm interested in going Duke University because I can attend to medical school in my I also want to follow my sister I'm interested interested in can you talk to her because I want to help people and they are thicker in Hindi  I am interested in being a gymnast because I take gymnastic class now and I am very good at it Sanitation Lego Razor scooters
